Norwegian’s loyalty programme, Norwegian Reward, has been named the best loyalty programme at the prestigious Freddie Awards. Norwegian also received an award in the categories Best Promotion and Best Customer Service. The Freddie Awards are among the travel industry’s most internationally acclaimed awards.

Norwegian has won a Freddie Award in the categories Programme of the Year, Best Promotion and Best Customer Service. Norwegian was nominated in no less than six categories. The Freddie Awards are the largest annual global awards for loyalty programs within the travel industry. The ceremony was held in Washington D.C.

Winning a Freddie Award truly is a great honour. This is a true recognition of our loyalty programme as the award is based entirely on members’ votes. We’ve been working hard to keep giving our loyal members better flights for less and we are particularly excited that this award coincides with the launch of our renewed Reward programme in May.

New benefits and more flexibility for Norwegian Reward members

Norwegian Reward is now being renewed with the same aim as before – to give Norwegian’s customers cheaper flights and an even smoother journey. Earning CashPoints and benefits are still at the core of the programme. The more Reward members choose to fly with Norwegian, the more benefits they receive. Norwegian is also adding a range of new benefits for the most frequent flyers.

Our members have told us that the benefits they can choose from are among the loyalty programme’s most important perks. In addition to greater flexibility when choosing benefits, our members now also can choose free overhead cabin bag as a benefit.

May Haukedahl Wilson, VP Loyalty and Partnerships at Norwegian.

Norwegian Reward has won ‘Programme of the Year’ at the Freddies, the top prize in the Europe & Africa category, four times before. In 2020 alongside ‘Programme of the Year’, Reward won the Freddie for ‘Best Promotion’ for the advent calendar, as well as ‘Best Customer Service’ and ‘Best Affinity Credit Card’. Over the years, Reward has also won several other awards, including the Freddie for ‘Best Up-and-Coming Loyalty Programme.’

United Airlines today announced changes to its MileagePlus Premier program that will make it easier to earn status in 2021 for the 2022 program year. United is reducing Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) thresholds next year and introducing first-of-its-kind promotions that help members earn status more quickly.

Early next year, United will deposit 25% of the PQP-only requirements in Premier members’ accounts based on their 2021 Premier status level. United will also give members bonus PQP for their first three trips flown in 2021 through Mar. 31, helping their flights go further toward reaching status.

Throughout this year, United has taken a leadership approach in enacting customer-friendly changes, and today’s announcement of making it easier to qualify for status is just another step we are taking to make United a better airline for our customers. From announcing state-of-the-art cleaning and safety policies, to debuting innovative new technologies and now adjusting our loyalty program to reflect this new environment, United customers can feel confident that we are making progressive changes that reflect their needs both next year and, in the years to come.

Luc Bondar, vice president of loyalty and marketing and President of MileagePlus at United.

Reducing Thresholds

To make earning status easier, United is reducing PQP and PQF requirements at each Premier level. New requirements in 2021 will be:

LevelStandard RequirementsRequirements Adjusted for 2021
Premier Silver4,000 PQP + 12 PQF or 5,000 PQP3,000 PQP + 8 PQF or 3,500 PQP
Premier Gold8,000 PQP + 24 PQF or 10,000 PQP6,000 PQP + 16 PQF or 7,000 PQP
Premier Platinum12,000 PQP + 36 PQF or 15,000 PQP9,000 PQP + 24 PQF or 10,000 PQP
Premier 1K18,000 PQP + 54 PQF or 24,000 PQP13,500 PQP + 36 PQF or 15,000 PQP

Automatically Depositing PQP

To make maintaining status even easier for Premier members, United will automatically deposit PQP into their accounts by Feb. 1, 2021. Members will receive 25% of the PQP-only requirement for 2021 based on their Premier status for 2021. Each level will earn the following PQP deposits to help get them on track to re-qualify for status through 2022:

Status level for 2021PQP deposit
Premier Silver875
Premier Gold1,750
Premier Platinum2,500
Premier 1K3,750

Bonus PQP

United is also offering its most rewarding Premier qualification bonus offer ever with the first ever bonus PQP promotion. On the first three PQP-earning trips next year taken between Jan. 1 through Mar. 31, members without Premier status will earn 50 percent bonus PQP and Premier members will earn 100 percent bonus PQP.

In addition to earning bonus PQP on flights, PQP earned from eligible MileagePlus credit cards – including the MileagePlus Explorer card – will now count toward Premier 1K® status if the PQF requirement is met. Previously, PQP earned from card spend were only eligible for up to Premier Platinum status. Eligible MileagePlus credits cards also continue to lead the market with one of the fastest ways toward earning Premier status credit, starting with spend at $12,000 each year.

More Opportunity for More Members

To give Premier members more flexibility to use their upgrades, United is extending all PlusPoints that are set to expire on or after Jan. 1, 2021 by an additional six months, which includes all PlusPoints earned from 2019 and 2020 activity. Additionally, as a promotion in 2021, United is giving Premier 1K members who meet the new requirements more opportunities to receive additional upgrades by reducing the milestone for earning extra PlusPoints. After earning Premier 1K status and 15,000 PQP, members will earn 20 PlusPoints for every additional 2,000 PQP in 2021 versus every 3,000 PQP in 2020 – United is the only global U.S. airline that allows members to earn unlimited upgrades after reaching its highest published status tier.

In 2021, all Premier members will also be able to confirm changes to their itineraries when making changes for travel on the same day when a new flight with the same fare class is open. United is the only U.S. airline to offer this benefit to all Premier members, in addition to allowing all customers to list for standby on a different flight to the same destination on the same day for free.

Norwegian is forced to furlough employees and reduce capacity considerably following the government’s decision to not support the company financially to get through the corona crisis while simultaneously imposing travel restrictions that actively discourage passengers from travelling.

The consequences of the government-imposed travel restrictions are critical and Norwegian needs to keep its running costs to a minimum, while the company continues to work on solutions to survive.

«Following today’s disappointing announcement from the government, we have no choice but to furlough an additional 1,600 colleagues and park 15 of the 21 aircraft we’ve operated the past months. Recently government-imposed travel restrictions have effectively stifled any hope of a stable and progressive recovery, Norwegian has been hit from all sides by factors outside of our control. This is a sad day for everyone at Norwegian and I sincerely apologise to all our colleagues that are now affected, but there is no other alternative. Prior to Covid-19, Norwegian employed more than 10,000 people, but the coming months there will be only 600 colleagues employed. Our goal is to keep six aircraft on domestic routes in Norway, and I expect that Norwegian will also receive route support from the Ministry of Transportation, as previously announced,” said CEO Jacob Schram of Norwegian.

Unfortunately, the significant route reduction will also affect customers who have already booked a flight with Norwegian.

“We will do everything we can to offer affected customers alternative travel option and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this situation. All affected customers will be notified by us directly,” said Schram.

These routes will be operated:

  • Oslo – Alta
  • Oslo – Bergen
  • Oslo – Bodø
  • Oslo – Evenes
  • Oslo – Haugesund
  • Oslo – Kirkenes
  • Oslo – Molde
  • Oslo – Stavanger
  • Oslo – Tromsø
  • Oslo – Trondheim
  • Oslo – Ålesund
  • Tromsø – Longyearbyen

So no route to and from UK and USA are planned. This looks like Norwegian is not going to make it through the winter.

What do you think and have you tried flying with Norwegian?

American Airlines is expanding its current preflight testing program to additional destinations, further opening the world for customers who want to travel. The airline will now offer preflight testing options to more destinations than any other U.S. carrier.

In November, preflight testing will be available for all American flights to Belize, Grenada, St. Lucia and the Hawaiian Islands.

Our initial preflight testing has performed remarkably well, including terrific customer feedback about the ease and availability of testing options. This next phase is an invigorating step forward in American’s relentless pursuit of reopening international travel and driving industry recovery while delivering a safe and positive travel experience.

Robert Isom, President of American Airlines

The Caribbean and Latin America

Starting Nov. 16, American will expand its partnership with LetsGetChecked, a convenient at-home testing option that includes observation by a medical professional via virtual visit, to offer at-home PCR testing to customers traveling to Belize (BZE), Grenada (GND) and St. Lucia (UVF). Results can be expected in 48 hours on average.

Testing requirements for each country currently include:

  • Belize: Travelers 6 years old and up must complete PCR testing within 72 hours of departure.
  • Grenada: Testing must be completed within 7 days prior to departure.
  • St. Lucia: Travelers 5 years and older must complete testing within 7 days of departure. Customers cannot board flights to St. Lucia without presenting a negative test result. Pre-arrival registration is mandatory; customers should visit stlucia.org for the latest information on travel restrictions and quarantine requirements.

American is currently operating service to BZE, GND and UVF from its Miami (MIA) hub and later this month will also launch service to UVF from Chicago (ORD). In December, the carrier will increase its flying to all three markets with service from BZE to MIA, Charlotte (CLT) and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW); from GND to MIA and CLT; and from UVF to MIA, CLT, ORD and Philadelphia (PHL).

Hawaii expansion

After launching a series of testing options to open travel to Hawaii in October, American is also expanding its partnership with LetsGetChecked for customers traveling to the Aloha State.

Beginning today, customers traveling to Hawaii from ORD, Los Angeles (LAX) and Phoenix (PHX) can now use LetsGetChecked. Results can be expected in 48 hours on average, and testing must be completed within 72 hours of the final leg of departure. As of this announcement, travelers who present a negative test upon arrival will be exempt from the state’s 14-day quarantine (certain County restrictions may still apply. Customers are encouraged to visit Hawaii’s county websites for the latest information about their final destination).

Visit aa.com to learn more about the preflight COVID-19 options available to customers.

American’s Clean Commitment

American’s preflight testing program will serve as a key element of the airline’s Clean Commitment, a multifaceted approach to giving customers peace of mind when they travel. American has also launched a travel tool, powered by Sherpa, to make travel planning easier for customers who are eager to reconnect with the people and places that matter most.

Norwegian Air has been named Europe’s Leading Low-Cost Airline 2020 for the sixth consecutive year at the 27th annual World Travel Awards, one of the travel industry’s most prestigious awards.

The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel industry and they are recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of industry excellence.

Norwegian has faced unprecedented challenges in 2020 due to the sudden global impact of COVID-19 across the travel industry. Throughout this prolonged crisis we have kept our customers at the heart of our business by continuing to operate key domestic and European routes while delivering our award-winning service. Winning ‘Europe’s Leading Low-Cost Airline’ for a 6th consecutive year is yet a further demonstration of the resilience and dedication of colleagues from across Norwegian who have all shown themselves to be true Red Nose Warriors.

Jacob Schram, CEO of Norwegian

Even though 2020 is the COVID-19 year the award continues. The first two month of the year was still normal and this was where Norwegian still had a longhaul business going and several european routes.

Despite the unprecedented challenges faced by the aviation industry this year, Norwegian has demonstrated unrivalled resilience, allowing it to continue delivering excellent customer service. Well done to Norwegian for winning ‘Europe’s Leading Low-Cost Airline’ for the sixth year in succession.

Graham E. Cooke, President & Founder, World Travel Awards

Throughout 2020 Norwegian remained committed to being a leader in sustainable aviation with the launch of a new environmental sustainability strategy that will begin immediately and deliver several industry-leading targets such as cutting CO2 emissions by 45 percent by 2030, removing all non-recyclable plastics and recycling all single-use plastics by 2023. This strategy builds on previous achievements which include becoming the first airline to sign the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) pledge, committing to become carbon neutral by 2050. Additionally, Norwegian was also voted the world’s most fuel-efficient airline on transatlantic routes in 2015 and 2018 by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and since 2010 the airline has reduced its emissions by 28 percent.

Norwegian operates a modern fuel-efficient fleet offering customers value and choice throughout their journey. Our aircraft are equipped with free gate to gate WiFi technology allowing customers to remain connected for business or pleasure for the duration of their onboard experience.

Emirates SkyCargo is stepping up its readiness to handle the logistical complexities of distributing a potential COVID-19 vaccine globally by creating the world’s first dedicated airside cargo hub for the vaccine in Dubai.

The air cargo carrier is taking a global leadership position by announcing that it will be re-opening its Emirates SkyCentral DWC cargo terminal in Dubai South to serve as a dedicated anchor hub for cold chain storage and distribution of the vaccine.

Watch a video about Emirates SkyCargo setting up the world’s largest GDP compliant airside hub for COVID-19 vaccine distribution:

The freight division of Emirates has also set up a dedicated rapid response team to coordinate requests from the various partners involved in the international vaccine distribution ecosystem and to streamline the carrier’s response to vaccine transportation requests.

Dubai is well positioned to serve as a gateway and distribution hub for COVID-19 vaccines to the rest of the world. We have the infrastructure and logistics connections, and a geographic location that puts markets representing more than two-thirds of the world’s population within an 8-hour flying radius. Over the years, through our continuous investment in capabilities and processes for the transport of temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals, Emirates SkyCargo has managed to position Dubai amongst major global pharmaceutical customers as the year-round preferred point of transit for their valuable cargo. Setting up a dedicated airside hub for COVID-19 vaccines is a keystone project harnessing our network, reach and competencies to positively impact the lives of people around the world.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Chairman and Chief Executive

World’s first dedicated airside hub for COVID-19 vaccine

Emirates SkyCargo’s vaccine hub in Dubai South will be the largest dedicated airside facility in the world for COVID-19 vaccines. The Dubai hub will allow the air cargo carrier to fly in vaccines from manufacturing sites globally, store and prepare shipments for regional and global distribution.

Emirates SkyCentral DWC has over 4,000 square metres of temperature controlled GDP certified dedicated pharma storage area allowing for large scale storage and distribution of the potential COVID-19 vaccines. Overall, it is estimated that the facility can hold around 10 million vials of vaccine at a 2-8 degrees Celsius temperature range at any one point of time.

The state of the art infrastructure at Emirates SkyCentral DWC is also complemented by one of the world’s largest fleet of Cool Dollys helping protect temperature sensitive cargo during transit between the aircraft and cargo terminal. Additionally, the availability of a large number of temperature controlled trucking docks and the proximity of the terminal to the aircraft parking gates will ensure rapid and efficient clearance of cargo for further distribution.

In addition to cold storage, Emirates SkyCargo will also offer dedicated zones for value-added services such as re-icing and repackaging of vaccines for global distribution for its customers.

The extensive size of the facility, which can potentially handle millions of vaccine doses, along with the creation of a dedicated team to handle and execute requests will allow Emirates SkyCargo to be able to effectively handle the large volume of time critical requests for cross-border vaccine movement that will follow the successful introduction of a vaccine.

Through a combination of scheduled and charter flights, the cargo carrier will then be able to fly the vaccines to markets where they will be most needed.

Emirates’ pharma transportation capabilities

Emirates SkyCargo is harnessing decades of experience gained from transporting temperature controlled pharmaceutical products and vaccines for global manufacturers to develop innovative solutions that will meet the challenge of distributing a potential COVID-19 vaccine globally within a short timeframe.

Since 2016, the air cargo carrier has invested substantially in its capabilities for the transportation of temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals. This included the introduction of a specialised product – Emirates Pharma – and the development of dedicated GDP certified ‘fit for purpose’ infrastructure pharma both at Dubai as well as at major origin and destination points under its pharma corridors programme that currently covers more than 30 cities. Emirates SkyCargo has moved more than a quarter million tonnes of pharmaceutical cargo in the last four years.

With its fleet of modern and efficient all wide-body aircraft and a network that currently spans more than 130 destinations across six continents, combined with the strategic geographic location of its Dubai hub, Emirates SkyCargo will be able to rapidly move vaccine shipments from manufacturing sites to the vaccine hub and then onwards to the rest of the world on a combination of scheduled and passenger flights.

Over the last few months, however, Emirates SkyCargo has worked on restoring its worldwide network and cargo connectivity with flight services restored to 75 destinations by May, 100 by July and nearly 135 destinations by early October. Emirates SkyCargo’s network covers all major pharmaceutical clusters and manufacturing locations, facilitating the eventual transportation of the COVID-19 vaccine once manufacturing commences.

Several milestones led up to this historic moment. From the groundbreaking of the Mobile A220 Final Assembly Line in January 2019, through the official start of A220 production in August 2019, and the inaugural flight of this aircraft in June, the A220 teams in Mirabel (Quebec) and Mobile worked closely together to make the A220 production in the U.S. a success.

Handing over the first U.S-assembled aircraft to a U.S.-based customer is a real point of pride for the A220 programme. This delivery is the first of many to come and shows the strong collaborative spirit between the A220 Programme teams globally.

Philippe Balducchi, leading the A220 programme.

To date, approximately 400 U.S. employees have been trained on A220 production – some in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, where the A220 program and primary final assembly line are located. A year ago, the first U.S. based A220 production team, comprised of experienced and new team members, began assembling A220s in Mobile.

Delta Air Lines is currently the largest A220 customer, with a total of 95 A220 aircraft on order, and will be the first A220 operator in the Americas to be operating both A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft types.

Benefitting from the latest technologies, the A220 is the quietest, cleanest and most eco- friendly aircraft in its category. Featuring a 50% reduced noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft, 25% lower fuel burn per seat and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards, the A220 is a great aircraft for neighborhood airports. Being a clean-sheet design, the A220 offers unrivalled operational efficiency and 25% lower operating costs per seat compared to previous generation aircraft.

As of end September 2020, 123 A220s have been delivered to seven operators and are being flown on routes in Asia, America, Europe and Africa, proving the great versatility of Airbus’ latest family member.
