Nobody wants to experience the same chaos of last summer with lost baggage and long waiting lines at the check in counters. Therefore, in order to skip all that misery, I have some tips and tricks to help you to just travel with a carry-on. This will make traveling a bit less stressful and believe me, you can pack more than you think. Before you start packing, check the weight limits for carry on luggage with your airline along with the number of bags you can bring along. This will differ per airline.

1. Make optimal use of clothing sets

It is best to do this a few days in advance. Prepare everything you want to take with you. Make sure you always bring a few basic items that you can combine with other items of clothing such as a pair of jeans which you can wear with several t-shirts or tops. Trying on everything in advance and taking photos of the items will help to prevent packing unnecessary clothing.

In addition, wear your ‘heaviest’ clothes when you fly. If you have a short flight, you can also put on layers. Perhaps for a long flight this will not be ideal. Alternatively, wear your most comfortable outfit but with your heaviest shoes or shoes that would take up a lot of space in your suitcase.

2. Roll and do not fold

What will save you a lot of space is rolling up your clothes. Roll them up tightly and you can actually store more in your suitcase than you think. The advantage of rolling is that it will wrinkle less compared to folding everything. If you still have wrinkles but no iron, you can hang the clothes in the bathroom when you take a hot shower. The steam ensures that the wrinkles are reduced.

3. Use all the space in the suitcase

More tips when traveling with a carry-on only: Use every inch in your suitcase. If you bring a small handbag, fill it with underwear for example. If you have a pair of sneakers in your suitcase, fill them with socks. Put everything in small bags to keep everything ‘fresh’.

Also take anything out of packaging. It may not make a lot of difference, but every little bit helps.

4.Vacuum bags

I would only use this method for clothing that is allowed to wrinkle since a vacuum bag does give you folds and creases, however, it saves a lot of space. I apply this process for tops, underwear, and pajamas. On the return flight, I place all clothing in the vacuum bags since obviously the wrinkles will not matter at that point as everything will be washed anyway.

Use vacuum bags whenever you will not need a vacuum cleaner. You can purchase these anywhere for just a few dollars. Simply by rolling and applying some force, all of the air releases out of the bag. This makes it one solid package.

5. Washing at your vacation address

Another option is to wash your clothes at your vacation address. There are travel size detergents that you can take with you and therefore you can take less clothing. This is handy for clothes that are not too dirty and only need a refresh.

Another option would be hotels that offer a laundry service. You can then have some clothes washed on-site using this service. Keep in mind that this process would incur extra costs. In large cities you also have the option of using a nearby laundromat.

6. Minis

Another one of those tips: If you only travel with a carry-on luggage, you will have the max of 1 liter of liquids that you can take with you in a container of up to 3.4 oz (100ml.). Pay attention to this since they are very strict about this rule. You can also buy travel size products for vacation. They are however quite pricey in comparison to the regular sized packages. Otherwise, you can also purchase empty travel minis and fill them yourself with the products you always use.

What I often do is take the minis from the hotel I’ve stayed in and simply reuse them. I rinse these well and fill them with my shampoo or shower gel. The empty minis for purchase are sometimes too big for the number of days of your trip and that’s a waste of space.

7. iPad/ E-reader

Don’t take books with you when you’re running out of space. Instead upload them on an e-reader or on your iPad. Also, I would advise not to take a laptop with you unless you really need it. You can upload so much content on an iPad instead. Alternately, you can simply upload everything on your phone. It is a smaller screen but you have everything on one device.

8. Pillowcase

I recently came across some “tips” on social media although I don’t think I would use them any time soon. Currently, it is going viral that you can take extra items with you in a pillowcase however, I don’t know if this really works.
This process surely won’t cause any problems with security however, I don’t know it will a be a problem upon boarding. It’s possible that it may be charged as an extra carry-on and in this case you would be stuck with it not fitting in your suitcase or it may be too heavy. Surely now that this method is going viral, TSA is going to pay more attention to it.

Extra tip

If the airline still wants you to check in your suitcase and you are afraid of losing your suitcase, you can also put a tracker in your suitcase. In this way at least you will know whether your suitcase is on the plane, and the location of it.
Don’t forget to pack at least one set of clothing and underwear in your personal purse/ bag. In this way, if your suitcase is lost or left behind, you always have an extra set of clothing and underwear. Also note, never put all the important items you can’t live without in your suitcase if it has to be checked in.

In my personal experience, these tips have always helped. I recently travelled to New York for 9 days with just a carry-on luggage. If it worked for me where I am a woman who wears different clothing every day and always brings too many shoes, it can definitely work for you!

The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing more than a year after it began. Due to numerous travel restrictions, it is sometimes not easy for holidaymakers to choose a travel destination. A destination that has been open to international tourism again since July 2020 and is actually perfect for traveling in the current time is in the Indian Ocean: The Maldives.

The Maldives are a picturesque archipelago located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, these tiny coral islands are grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls, held together by ring-shaped coral reefs.

Natural social distancing in the Maldives

Voted World’s Leading Destination 2020 by the World Travel Awards, the unique geography (with over 1,190 islands scattered across the ocean) makes social distancing easy.

Add to this the one-island-one-resort concept that the Maldives are famous for. All resorts are on a private island where only the staff and guests are. This guarantees a high level of privacy, perfect for a relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) awarded the Maldives the “Safe Travels Stamp” in recognition of efforts to implement adapted health and safety measures that are consistent with WTTC global protocols for safe travel. In addition, Velana International Airport received the Airport Council International (ACI) Airport Health Accreditation for consistent measures in accordance with the ACI standards in “the new normal”.

On arrival in the Maldives, a free 30-day visa for all nationalities will be issued, provided that you have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and a confirmed booking in an official tourist accommodation. However, due to the current safety precautions, it is also necessary to submit an online health declaration 24 hours prior to arrival and to take a COVID-19 test within 96 hours prior to arrival, even for vaccinated travelers.

Vaccination progress

Administration of the COVID-19 vaccination program began on February 1, 2021. The government of the Maldives will provide free COVID-19 vaccinations to all citizens and residents of the country in the coming months. Visit Maldives has partnered with the Ministry of Tourism to launch the “I’m Vaccinated” campaign to spread a positive message about vaccinating tourism workers and promote the initiatives that are being taken to ensure that the Maldives is one of the safest travel destinations in the world.

The ultimate goal is to make the Maldives the travel destination with the world’s first fully vaccinated tourism sector. By July 1, 2021, over 96% of resort employees had received the first dose of the vaccine, while 70% of resort employees were fully vaccinated.

The age-old discussion about check-in vs carry-on is best started with some history. It was in 1987 that the ‘Rollaboard’ case was invented. This invention meant that passengers could now easily avoid checking in luggage entirely: the age of carry-on travel had begun.

Later that year, the first carry-on guidelines came into place, as it became an increasingly popular way to travel. With hand luggage alone, you could avoid the lines at check-in and also save time upon arrival by not having to wait at the baggage belt.

Sounds great, but…

Fast forward to 10 years later, in 1997, The Association of Flight Attendants sponsors a conference called – and here it comes:

“Carry-On Bags – An Everyday Risk”

Basically, the poor crew members were struck by cabin luggage on a regular basis, and no less than 4,000 passengers were seriously injured by falling luggage the year before the conference.

So, more and more restrictions came, and one of the serious downsides about travelling with a carry-on these days, is that airlines are becoming increasingly strict. Accepted size and weight gets tighter, and the risk of having to check in your carry-on at the gate seems to rise by the flight.

Been there done that – rushing to pull out essentials like laptop, passport and wallet (that you then have to carry around in a half-broken plastic bag – originally meant for dirty laundry – for the remainder of the trip).

Is checking in baggage any better?

When flying with check-in luggage, passengers encounter more queues at the airport than they otherwise would. And let’s be honest, there are few things more annoying than a long queue at a crowded (and somehow always either too hot or too cold) airport. Whether you’re a frequent business traveler (where time is money), or hoping to get your annual holiday off to a relaxed and enjoyable start, it’s not a fun way to spend your free time.

Then there is the curse of lost baggage. If you’ve ever had your bag go missing – for days, weeks, or forever – you know how stressful it can be. Again, constantly chasing the airline for information or compensation just isn’t a good way to spend your holiday, or a productive way to spend your business trip. Fear of your bag going missing is a good reason for wanting to keep your luggage at hand.

On the plus side, over the past 3 years the percentage of lost luggage has actually gone down significantly, with 70% fewer bags going missing. Things should continue to improve, with more tracking options available on the market, and airlines constantly trying to improve their baggage handling, as it’s an important factor for passenger satisfaction.

Check-in vs carry-on baggage

Let’s face the facts: for most people, flying without luggage is not going to happen anytime soon. It’s going to be a little while before we can 3D print our fully recyclable clothes, and that your laptop becomes the size of a matchbox because it works with tiny touchable projectors, instead of a screen and keyboard (brilliant idea – anyone?).

However, if passengers keep trying to stow as much in their carry-on bags as humanly possible, and airlines still use the same handling systems for check-in luggage that results in said passengers having to physically stand in line for ages… We’re not getting anywhere.

The solution is to make flying with check-in luggage as comfortable, quick and easy as possible.

Small changes can make a big difference. As I mentioned at the start, just putting some wheels underneath a case dramatically changed the way we’ve traveled over the last 35 years. One of the downsides of traveling with baggage was having to carry it, so that was a problem solved.

What about queuing?

Perhaps the most common argument for not checking in baggage is to avoid the queues at check-in and at the baggage belt upon arrival. Depending on the trip, saving that time can be more valuable than the benefits of flying with a bigger bag.

Physically having to get your bag labeled at a desk/kiosk at the airport is causing queue number 1. Then we have a fun time at the baggage belt where you are waiting because you can never really quite tell when your luggage arrives, causing queue number 2.

But let’s look at the following scenario: instead of having to choose between check-in and carry-on, everyone flies with check-in luggage. You simply automatically get 1-3 suitcase(s)/bag(s) for check-in, free of additional cost and you’re allowed 1 non-checked bag with essentials only (let’s just forget about sizes and regulations here for a second). Instead of queuing at the check-in desk, you use an electronic bag tag and check in your bag from the comfort of your home, hotel, or anywhere you like, along with your mobile flight check-in through the airline app.

Ready to fly

Everyone gets to the airport ready to fly, and all that’s left is stopping by a touchless drop-off point where you leave your bag(s). With no one having trolleys and bigger carry-on luggage, the flow through the airport is fully optimized. No tripping over trolleys. The security checks will be a breeze for both passengers and staff – and also will become safer as the bags get smaller as there are fewer options to hide items. Boarding will be incredibly easy compared to the current situation: now there is plenty of room in the overhead bins. There are no heavy bags and suitcases to be stowed away, no more risk of those hurting heads either. Plus, you avoid the risk of having to check in your carry-on bag at the gate entirely.

Thanks to a tracker inside your check-in luggage, you grab your mobile as soon as you sit down to enjoy your flight, and can see whether your bag is in fact boarded. Lost luggage is a thing of the past. In case you see it’s somehow not on the plane, you can send out a direct notification that your bag is lost, urging the airline staff to look for it.

Upon arrival, the same goes for disembarking – one easy passenger flow goes from the plane through the airport. You receive regular updates about when your bag(s) arrives on the belt, and in case yours is still some time away, you can take your time and have a refreshment along the way.

So you see, with the overall passenger flow improving, everyone’s journey improves tremendously, and flying with check-in bags will actually be faster in this scenario than travelling with a carry-on in the old setup. There won’t be any need for a check-in VS carry discussion to begin with.

The great thing is that this technology is already available, and there is no need for any structural changes at airports for it to work…

Would you consider purchasing items like electronic bag tags and trackers for travel with luggage to improve?

We have previously flagged the excellent cashback site TopCashback.com, a site which allows you to earn straightforward cashback on purchases from a variety of travel (and non-travel) related retailers.

However, there is no obvious reason why those in the US cannot also take advantage of the UK site, and there are two principal reasons you should consider doing this:

Number 1: It has a sign up bonus

If you sign up to the UK version of TopCashback, you’ll get a £10 sign up bonus (~$14) when you make your first purchase of £10 or more.

It doesn’t matter whether you have already received a sign up bonus via TopCashback.com, you will still be eligible for the UK bonus.

Number 2: It sometimes offers better rates on your spend!

This is a big one. Clearly if you are US-based, a number of retailers are ruled out where delivery is required. However, when it comes to travel, the options will often take you to exactly the same website (IHG.com etc), but with a different rate of cashback applying.

Take booking.com, for example. You can currently get a good 7% cashback on TopCashback.com:

But that goes to a much more impressive 10% on TopCashback.co.uk.

Clearly, booking.com is booking.com however you access it. The only difference here is that your rebate is substantially higher!

Meanwhile, Radisson International is 6% with the US website:

But a substantially more generous 8.4% with the UK version of TopCashback:

Hardly surprisingly, the imbalance in the cashback rates can work the other way, too. But in these circumstances, just go with TopCashback.com!

You have a GBP balance – can you cash out?

Cashing out is easy via Paypal, regardless of where you are based.

You can simply cash out the GBP into your Paypal Account, and either have it immediately converted to USD, or hold it in a GBP account within Paypal and convert it at your convenience.

The Corona pandemic has forced aviation into an unprecedented crisis. Hundreds of aircraft remain grounded. Some even have to leave the skies forever to save costs. Many airlines also have to send employees home and further adapt their operations to the current market conditions. Although the demand for air travel seems to be slowly increasing worldwide, there is by no means a real recovery yet, so it seems. Nevertheless, this may change in the coming next six months. When will aviation finally pick up again?

More destinations

In the past months, many reports came out that various airlines are increasing the number of destinations again. Especially in Europe, airlines are increasing their network. New routes are also regularly added based on demand. Delta also adds more flights every few weeks.

Nevertheless, the number of destinations is still far away from pre-crisis level. This is partly because business and leisure traffic has not yet started. Of course, this is partly due to the diverse and ever-changing Corona approach of the relevant national governments.

JFK airport terminal 4 (Source: Unsplash / Kevin Dellandrea)

Corona policy

One of the obstacles to a real restart of aviation is the different and ever-changing Corona policies in many countries. For example, in European countries the corona policies seemed quite stable and predictable in terms of policy changes the past period. But now more regions and countries are being “locked” or additional entry conditions are enforced. For example, Italy introduced a mandatory Corona test on arrival at an Italian airport just recently. And in Germany it is no longer that easy to travel between the different federal states.

All measures are of course intended to limit the further spread of the Corona virus. But the patchwork of rules and regulations doesn’t make things any easier for travelers. This certainly affects travellers’ willingness to go on holiday abroad, for example. Or to take a business trip.

The Corona approach of airlines is of course also different. For example, there are carriers that follow a strict social distancing policy on the ground and on board. But there are also airlines that determine this per flight. In theory you could end up in full flight. Many travelers don’t feel comfortable about that, despite wearing a mouth mask as a means of protection. SkyTeam recently called for a mandatory Corona test when you fly. This allows a high degree of certainty to be established whether it is justified for someone to fly. But it may take sometime until this is implemented globally.

Recovery

A recovery of the aviation industry needs a central approach by national governments and also ‘recognizable’ policies at airlines. According to an OAG survey of 4,000 travelers worldwide, 63% said they would consider a European flight in the next 6 months. 73% would consider a domestic flight if needed. The research shows that young people in particular are more likely to fly than older people. Despite the situation, people are more positive about flying in the United States. As many as 73% say they are considering an international flight in the next six months. 81% dare to take a domestic flight. In Asia people are a lot more careful, so it seems. According to OAG’s survey, “only” 55% of those surveyed consider an international flight, versus 78% for a domestic flight.

If we project these figures on current developments in aviation, it is to be expected that people will fly more in the coming months. In any case, the capacity has increased considerably. But the occupancy rate must now also increase. It is expected that domestic traffic will be the first to restart. In any case, the expectation is that an upward trend will start in the next 6 months. Before aviation is back to pre-COVID-19 level, according to experts, we will be about 3-4 years further.

Responsibility

A safe and responsible recovery of the aviation industry will depend on the correct measures that airlines take, but mainly also an unambiguous policy of national and federal authorities and cooperating national governments. A “global patchwork of policies” certainly does not help. Passengers can also take their responsibility by being well informed and by following all instructions from airlines and airports. To what extent and in what way aviation will further develop will become clear in the coming months.

You can read more about OAG’s research here.

Dear fellow travellers,

We hope you are staying safe and healthy.

The travel industry has seen some huge setbacks due to the developments around COVID-19. Airlines have grounded fleets, hotels see rooms go empty, people are unable to get home, and no one knows quite what tomorrow will bring.

Travel businesses want to understand your needs during this time, and together, we can help let them know what it is you really want.

With our previous survey, we saw over 27.000 travellers stepping in to help guide the industry in the right direction. Now that the longer-term impact of COVID-19 is becoming clearer, we would like to ask for your help once more.

The answers you provide will be used to determine what new products and services the travel industry could possibly introduce that fit your desires as a traveller in the months ahead.

TRAVEL & COVID-19 SURVEY:
TRAVEL TECHNOLOGY

This survey particularly looks at technology focused on luggage that might help decrease the number of contact points during travelling.

Please fill out this survey (only takes 3 minutes) and help us help them, to help you.

The survey investigates various parameters such as individual travel luggage trends and the extent to which they affect your travels and your travel experience. Queried in this survey, for example, are your reasons to fly with check-in luggage or not, and your concerns when traveling with check-in luggage.

We also ask for any frustrations you might experience traveling with luggage and how airlines would be able to take these away.

In the next step, we’d like to find out what sort of facilities you currently use such as mobile technology and priority check-in/bag-drop. And what you would be willing to spend on these facilities.

Then also we’re trying to find out what your experiences are with lost luggage and what is most important to you when your luggage gets lost.

You can see why this information is incredibly valuable for airlines and other travel business to help optimize your travels. By giving them insights into your needs as a customer, we can actively assist the travel industry to speed up recovery from the crisis.

Once the results are in, we will share the full report with you.

Please feel free to share the survey through your own channels too, as the more answers we have, the more useful the results.

Thank you – Team InsideFlyer

In the eighties and nineties, the MD80 gained cult status at American Airlines. Connoisseurs and fans affectionately dubbed it “Mad Dog”. Its other nickname, “Super 80”, was even used in adverts: “Have a super day”, “The Super 80’s are coming!” or “Super 80 for the Eighties” were
the slogans the MD80 embarked on its high-flying career to in the eighties.

Backbone of the American Airlines fleet

At the height of this career, the twinjet with its distinctive rear engines and gleaming aluminium finish was the backbone of all American Airlines short and medium-haul flights. Following the success of the test phase, the airline had ordered 260 “Mad Dogs” in the early 1980s.

At the turn of the millennium, these were joined by another 103 aircraft from the takeover of Trans World Airlines, and from then on, around a third of all versions of this famous plane ever produced flew for American Airlines. From 2003 onwards, the airline slowly but surely sent the planes into their hard-earned retirement. The last passenger flight of an MD80 took to the skies from Dallas/Fort Worth on 4 September 2019 with flight number AA80, flying to Chicago O’Hare.

American Airlines’ MD-80 partially lives on thanks to Aviationtag

However, one of American Airlines’ MD-80s lives on… and you can own a piece.

9,000 unique pieces of a limited Aviationtag edition were made from the fuselage of an MD-80 with the registration N922TW. The edition is officially licensed by American Airlines and, thanks to almost 20 years of retirement under the New Mexico desert sun, comes in a unique retro look.

To make the tags, the aircraft was disassembled and parts of the outer skin were cut at Aviationtag’s very own factory in Cologne, until they could be punched into the distinct Aviationtag® shape. The final step in this upcycling process was precision printing. Each of the strictly
limited-edition Aviationtags features the aircraft type, registration number and edition number. Each Aviationtag may vary from other serial numbers in terms of its thickness/colour/etc and is one of a kind.

The data printed on the tags even allows registered users to be identified. This custom Lost & Found Service provided by Aviationtag has already made it possible to reunite many a lost Aviationtag and attached bunch of keys with their owners.

Etihad Airways have launched a limited time promotion that is potentially quite lucrative, so lucrative that it makes you wonder about the financial health of the airline.

Between now and 24 June, 2020, you can buy a “travel voucher” from Etihad and receive an additional 50% in face value.

In simple terms, you give Etihad $1,000 today and you will be able to spend $1,500 on Etihad flights during the next two years. There’s no messing around with booking actual flights and then cancelling for a voucher “refund” with bonus, or booking a flight to Doha and then changing the final destination to Melbourne. You also don’t have to worry about a headline discount only applying to the base fare (and not taxes / surcharges) or for availability to be heavily restricted.

How Does it Work?

Firstly, you must become a member of Etihad’s loyalty programme, Etihad Guest. Then you call Etihad to buy a voucher, which can be for any amount between $250 and $65,000!!  (You must pay and spend in US dollars, which might mean that you lose a bit on currency fluctuations and any hidden commissions if this is not your currency).

You will end up with an amount in your “Travel Bank”, which is very easy to use when booking flights online at etihad.com.

It’s also worth noting that you can book travel for anybody, not just yourself, so if you have a travel-obsessed family member, this might make an interesting Christmas present!

The Bottom Line

The mathematically-inclined amongst you will note that a 50% bonus is equivalent to a 33% discount.  Even though Etihad is not as renowned for cheap Business Class fares as Qatar Airways, a 33% discount on whatever flights you desire is nonetheless quite attractive.

For further details, you can click here to be taken to the promotion website.
